Colac is a vibrant rural town with a strong community spirit about 150 km south-west of Melbourne and with a population around the 13, 000 mark. It’s situated close to the Great Otway National Park and is only an hour or less away from some of the most beautiful towns on the Great Ocean Road.
There’s lots to like about it: it’s a very pretty town in a beautiful region, less than two hours from Melbourne. The Great Ocean Road is not far away and easy to get to; 45 minutes to Lorne. A major benefit for residents is the cost of housing; about a quarter of Melbourne’s median house price and half of Geelong’s.
For mobility scooter users and others with disabilities, there is a renewed focus on access and at last count Colac has five RECHARGE scheme points and the Council is currently working on an interactive guide for mobility scooter users. Whilst the road up to the CBD is on a slope, generally around town it’s reasonably good for scooter users. Local Susan says: “at my last count Colac has five RECHARGE scheme points. My favourite is at the Botanic Café in Fyans Street: I’m a big coffee drinker!”
